古英語 āmasian（困惑させる）は、外へ・すっかりを表す頭の部分に、「惑わす・混乱させる」を表す語が付いた形。頭が真っ白になるほど惑わされるのが原義で、古くは「呆然とさせる」に近かった。
現在の amazed は驚きのうちでも感嘆の側に寄り、be amazed at／by で「感心して驚く」。名詞の maze（迷路）も同系で、「惑わす」側から出た語である。
