raise（持ち上げる）+ -ing。中英語では reysynge の形で、古ノルド語 reisa（上げる・起こす） に現在分詞の語尾が付いた形につながる。
名詞としては「上げること・増加」で、fund-raising（資金集め）・price raising（値上げ）・child raising（子育て）のように、raise の各用法がそのまま名詞化する。動詞 raise の意味の幅がそのまま raising の幅になると考えればよい。
補足: 単独では raising より rise（上昇）や increase（増加）が使われることが多く、raising は複合語の後半に置かれる形で目にするのが普通。
