ad-（〜へ・近くに）+ culture（共有された生活様式）+ -ation（行為・過程を表す名詞）、あるいは acculturate（他の文化を身につける）の名詞形。「別の文化の方へ寄っていくこと」が芯。
頭の *ad-（〜へ） は方向の印で、adapt・adjust と同じ「対象の方へ寄せる」動き。文化そのものを変える話ではなく、人や集団がもう一方の文化へ近づいて身につけていく過程を指す。
