古英語 stǣġer（階段・段）にさかのぼる。stair は階段の一段を指し、ふつう階段全体をいうときには stairs と複数形にする。足を一段ずつ高いところへ置き直して上る姿を思い浮かべよう。

go up the stairs は「階段を上る」、sit on the bottom stair は「一番下の段に座る」。上り下りする連なりは stairs、その中の一段は a stairと、使う場面を対にすると数の扱いも覚えられる。
