覚え方
ラテン語 strictus（締め付けられた・引き締まった） が英語に入って strait。「狭く締まっている」が原義で、陸地に挟まれた狭い水路、つまり海峡を指すようになった。
形容詞としては「窮屈な・厳しい」で、in dire straits（ひどく困窮して）のように複数形で「苦境」を表す。狭くて身動きが取れないという感覚が、そのまま困難の比喩になっている。
同じ strictus から strict（厳しい）、restrict（制限する）、constrict（締め付ける）が来ている。まっすぐの straight とは綴りも由来も別の語。
