surrogateの語源と覚え方
覚え方
surrogate は、ラテン語 surrogō「ほかの人を代わりに立てる」に由来する surrogātus につながる。「ある役割の場所を、別の人や物が埋める」というのが中心で、名詞なら「代理人・代わりになるもの」、形容詞なら「代わりの」を表す。単に似ていることより、何かの役割を引き受ける点に注目したい。
a surrogate parent なら、親の役割を担う人。本人がその場にいなくても、必要な支えや働きを別の人が受け持つイメージだ。物についても a surrogate for ... という形で「〜の代用となるもの」と言える。空いた役割の席へ別のものが入る図を思い浮かべると、代理人と代用品を同じ意味の核から理解できる。
