tarryの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古フランス語 tariier（怒らせる） が英語に入って tarry。英語では意味が移り、「ぐずぐずする・長居する」を表すようになった。
今では文語・詩語の響きがあり、Do not tarry（ぐずぐずするな）のように使う。日常では linger や delay の方が普通。
タール状という意味の tarry は、tar（タール）に -y が付いた別の語で、綴りが同じでも由来は別。発音も違い、こちらは tar の母音をそのまま保つ。
