ラテン語 voluntārius（自発的な・志願者の）= voluntās（意志・自由意思・欲求）+ -ārius（〜を扱う人）。自分の意志で選び、強制されずに行うことから「自発的な」という意味になった。

voluntās の「意志」から、voluntary は「自発的に実行する・強制されない」を表す。volunteer（自ら申し出る人・志願する）や volunteerism（自発的な奉仕活動）も同じ仲間で、volunt を見たら「意志で進んで行う」と覚えるとよい。
