覚え方
volunteer は、ラテン語 voluntārius（自発的な・志願者の）にさかのぼる語で、voluntās（意志・自由意思・欲求）と、名詞を作る -ārius（〜を扱う人） に分けて考えられる。そこから「自分の意志で申し出る人」→「無報酬で奉仕する人・志願兵」になった。末尾の -eer（実践者・愛好家） も、volunteer が「自発的に行動する人」を表す形を支えている。
voluntary（自発的な・強制されない）も同じ仲間で、背景には *welh₁-（強く望む・慎重に選ぶ） という「自分の意志で選ぶ」イメージがある。volunt- を見たら「意志で望む」、-eer を見たら「それを実践する人」 と読むと、volunteer の意味を思い出しやすい。
