wheat は古英語 hwǣte（小麦）を受け継ぐ、穀物の名前。white「白い」とも語源的につながる語で、明るい色を手掛かりに覚えられる。ただし、目の前の小麦や小麦粉が必ず真っ白という意味ではなく、現代では植物やその穀粒を指す独立した名詞である。
wheat flour は「小麦粉」、a field of wheat は「小麦畑」。パンの材料として粉を見掛けたら、その前段階に穂を付けた小麦があると想像しよう。畑の穀物が wheat、それをひいた粉が wheat flourとつなげると、植物と食品材料の両方の場面で意味を取り出しやすい。
