古英語 strēaw（わら）にさかのぼる。straw は、穀物の実を取り除いたあとに残る乾いた茎を指す。束ねたり敷き詰めたりできる、細長い茎を思い浮かべよう。
a straw hat は「麦わら帽子」、a drinking straw は飲み物を吸う「ストロー」。飲用の管の名は、もとの中空の茎の利用につながる。材料としては straw、一本の管なら a straw と使い、もとの細長い茎と、それに似た管を結び付けて覚えられる。
