ラテン語 stipula（茎・わら）にさかのぼり、stubble は収穫した畑に残る短い茎を表す。作物の上の部分が刈り取られ、根元近くの茎が地面から突き出している姿が基本になる。
顔について使えば、短く伸びた「無精ひげ」。a day's stubble は「一日分伸びた短いひげ」である。畑の短い刈り跡と、顔に生えた短い毛を、表面から少しずつ突き出る形で結び付けると覚えやすい。
