whisperingの語源と覚え方

古英語 hwisprian（ささやく）から。奥にあるのは *ḱwey-（シューと音を立てる）で、息の音をまねた語。whistle（口笛・笛）も同じ流れにある。
声帯をほとんど使わない小声を指し、a whispering campaign と言えば陰口による中傷戦術のこと。
風や葉のかすかな音にも使い、the whispering of leaves（葉ずれの音）のように表せる。
