ラテン語で「高み・柱」を表した語群から colum（column・columnar・columnist・columella）と culmin（culminate 頂点に達する・culmination）が来ており、excellō（抜きん出る）由来の excel も「上に出る」という同じ発想でつながる。excellent・excellence・excellency は今では「優れた」の意味だけが残るが、原義は「高く抜きん出ている」。colonnade・colonel は柱や柱状の隊列を経由した語とされる。
ゲルマン語系の本来語では hill（高まり）がそのまま残り、uphill・downhill・foothill・hilltop・hillside のように地形の語をつくる。haul（引く・引き上げる）や hale、hull・hell のように意味の離れた語も同じハブに束ねられているので、全体を一つの筋で理解しようとせず、colum / culmin / excel / hill / haul という綴りの塊ごとに押さえるのが安全。
