覚え方
actually は actual に -ly（副詞を作る語尾）を加えた語で、ラテン語 āctuālis（実際の行為や現在の現実問題に関する）に由来する。語の背景には *h₂eǵ-（駆り立てる） と *leyg-（跳ぶ・走る・活発に動く） があり、実際に動いているもの、現実に起きているものという方向へ意味がまとまった。
そのため actually は、外見や理論上の可能性ではなく、「実際には」「本当は」と現実を示す副詞になった。相手の思い込みをやわらかく訂正するときにもよく使われる。
actual は「現実の」、-ly は「〜のように」と考えると、actually は「現実に」という意味になる。actual、actuality、actuate なども、現実の働きや動きに結びつけて覚えるとよい。
