alone は all（すべて）+ one（一つ・一人） という組み合わせで、古い形 allone（完全に一人で）にさかのぼる。「全体の中に一人だけ」というのが原義で、そこから「一人で」「孤立して」という意味になった。
古英語 eall（全て）と ān（一つ・ある）が結びつき、中英語の all oon（完全に一人で）へ発展した。*ala-（完全な・全体の）も同じイメージを支えているので、all が示す全体から one だけを切り出すと覚えるとよい。
