覚え方
古英語 ānlīċ ＝ ān（一つの）+ -līċ（〜のような） で「一つきりのような」。ān は現代の one・a / an に、-līċ は -ly や -like に当たり、*leyg-（似た・平らな）にさかのぼる。
「ただ一つ」という中身から、形容詞の「唯一の」（an only child = 一人っ子）、副詞の「〜だけ」、話し言葉の「ただし」まで広がった。
副詞の only は置く位置で意味が変わる。I only saw her.（見ただけ）と I saw only her.（彼女だけを見た）の違いが典型。
