an-（〜でない・〜なしの）+ -archy（支配の形態） で「支配者がいないこと」。ラテン語 anarchia（支配者がいないこと）を経て英語に入り、頭の an- は *ə-（〜でない）に遡る。
-archy の仲間を並べると意味の幅がつかめる。monarchy（一人の支配＝君主制）・oligarchy（少数の支配）・hierarchy（聖なる序列＝階層）。anarchy はその「ゼロ」にあたる。
思想としての無政府主義は anarchism、その支持者は anarchist。日常語としては「大混乱」の意味で使われることが多い。
