覚え方
古英語 brōþor（兄弟）をそのまま受け継いだ、英語の最も古い層に属する親族語。借用ではなく、はじめから英語にあった語である。
注意したいのは複数形が二つあること。血のつながった兄弟は brothers、修道会・組合・教会など「同じ集団の仲間」を指すときは古い形 brethren を使う。means に「修道士」があるのはこの用法。
補足: brotherly（兄弟らしい）・brotherhood（兄弟の絆・同胞団）・blood brother（義兄弟）。呼びかけの bro もこの語の短縮。
