覚え方
cal はラテン語 caleō（熱い）。状態を表す or が付いた calor は「熱」そのもので、それがフランス語で単位の名 calorie になった。要するに「熱を測るための単位」である。
定義は水 1 グラムの温度を 1 度上げる熱量。栄養学で言う「カロリー」はその 1000 倍の kcal のことで、英語では Calorie（大文字）や kilocalorie と書き分ける。食品表示の数値は kcal だと知っておくと混乱しない。
同じ「熱」の系統に calorific（熱を生じる）・calorimeter（熱量計）がある。
