ギリシャ語 κᾰτᾰ-（下へ） に由来する cata- と、-ode（道筋・電気の導体） を合わせた造語で、原義は「下りの道」。19 世紀の電気学者が anode と対にして名づけた。
-ode の背景には *sed-（座る） があり、「進んでいく道すじ」のイメージ。電流が入ってくる側・還元が起こる側の電極が cathode（陰極・カソード）で、対になる電極が anode。
cathode ray tube（ブラウン管）でおなじみ。cata- は catastrophe（下へひっくり返る→大惨事）のような語にも現れ、cata を見たら「下へ」 と読む。
