an-（上へ・再び）+ -ode（道筋・電気の導体を表す） で「上りの道」。an- の正体はギリシャ語の ᾰ̓νᾰ-（上へ・再び）で、電流が回路から入っていく側の電極、すなわち陽極を指す。
-ode は *sed-（座る）に遡る「道筋」の要素で、electrode（電極）・diode（二極管）・cathode（陰極）に共通する。-ode を見たら「電気の通り道」と読めばよい。
補足: 電池を使うときは正極が anode とは限らず、「酸化が起きる側が anode」が本来の定義（放電中の電池では負極側）。1834年にファラデーの依頼を受けたウィリアム・ヒューウェルが cathode と対で作った造語。
