center(真ん中)+ piece(一部・一点) で、もとは食卓の中央に置く飾り。
そこから比喩に広がり、展示や計画の中で最も目を引く「目玉・中心的存在」を指す。the centerpiece of the reform(改革の目玉)、the centerpiece of the exhibition(展示の目玉)のように使う。
英式綴りは centrepiece。近い語に highlight(呼び物)があるが、centerpiece は「全体の中心に据えられたもの」という位置づけを強調する。
