ラテン語 certus（ふるい分けられて定まった→確かな）から。語根 *krey-（ふるい分ける）の分詞で、「ふるいにかけて残った、間違いのないもの」が原義。そこから「確かな・確信して」、さらに「（他と分けられた）特定の」の意味も生まれた。
同じ *krey- からは concern（関わる）・criterion（見分けの基準）・crisis（ふるい分けの瞬間→危機）・critic（目利き→批評家）が出ている。cert／cri を見たら「ふるい分け」のイメージ。
