client は、ラテン語 cliēns（パトロンに依存する人）に由来する。自分だけでは十分な保護や支援を得られず、力のある人物に頼る人という関係が、語の出発点になっている。

その後、保護を受ける人という意味から、専門家や会社にサービスを依頼する「顧客・クライアント」へと意味が広がった。clientele（顧客層）も同じ仲間なので、client を見たら「支援やサービスを受ける側」と覚えるとよい。

*ḱley-傾く・もたれる
英語では clin（incline・recline）、clim（climate・climatic）、lean（lean・leaning）、lat（latitude・latitudinal）などの形で現れ、「傾く・斜めになる」イメージを示す。
*ḱlew-聞く
