覚え方
古英語 rēdere（読む人） を受け継いだ語で、今の英語でも read + -er（動作主を表す） とそのまま読める。read の背後には *Hreh₁dʰ-（考える・整える） があり、もとは書かれたものを考えて解くことだった。
意味は「読者」が中心だが、語学の教材読本（a German reader＝ドイツ語読本）や、カードリーダーのような読み取り装置にも使う。「読む主体」なら人でも機械でもよいのがこの -er の働き。
補足: イギリスの大学では Reader が准教授に相当する職位を指す。文脈によって人・本・装置・肩書きと指すものが変わるので、周りの語で判断する。
