criticの語源と覚え方
覚え方
crit はギリシャ語 κρῐτής（裁定者・審判）、ic は「〜に関する」を作る -ῐκός。判定する人に関わる語で、ラテン語 criticus を経て「作品の良し悪しを判定する人＝批評家」になった。
単に感想を述べる人ではなく、基準をもって判断する人という含みがある。a film critic（映画評論家）のほか、a critic of the policy（その政策に批判的な人）のようにも使う。
criticism（批評・非難）・critical（批評的な、重大な）も同族。critical が「批判的な」と「決定的な」の両方を持つのも、分かれ目を見極めるという一点でつながっている。
