覚え方
ラテン語 comprehendō（つかむ・把握する・理解する）から、comprehēnsiō（把握・理解・逮捕）が生まれ、そこに -tiō（動作・過程・結果を表す名詞要素） が関わる。comprehendō は ** kom-（共に・完全に）* と ** gʰed-（見つける・つかむ）* の組み合わせとして、「完全につかむ」イメージを持つ。
手で対象をしっかりつかむことから、話や文章の内容を頭の中で「つかむ」ことへ意味が広がり、comprehension は「理解力・理解した内容」を表すようになった。また、範囲をすっぽり含むという意味から「包括範囲」にもつながる。
prehend を見たら「つかむ」、com- を加えて「全体をつかむ」と覚えるとよい。文章の細部だけでなく、全体の意味を把握するのが comprehension である。
