覚え方
古英語 understandan は、under-（ここでは「下に」ではなく「間に・中に」の意で、印欧祖語 *h₁en- にさかのぼるとされる）と、standan（立つ、印欧祖語 *steh₂- にさかのぼる）からなる語で、「物事の間・中に立つ」ことで全体を把握する、というのが原義とされる。これに接尾辞 -ing が付いたのが understanding（理解・知力）である。
現代の under-（下に）のイメージとは違い、古い under- は「中に」を意味していた点がおもしろい。「物事の内側・渦中に立って全体をつかむ」という発想が、そのまま「理解する力」の意味になり、さらに互いの理解に基づく「合意」の意味にも広がった。
standan の仲間には stand（立つ）・withstand（対抗して立つ→耐える）がある。understanding は「物事の中に立って全体をつかむこと」とイメージすると覚えやすい。
