confettiの語源と覚え方

fetti の部分はラテン語 faciō「作る・なす」で、con(すっかり)と合わさった cōnficiō は「手を加えて仕上げる」。その系統のイタリア語 confetto は「砂糖衣のアーモンド菓子」を指し、その複数形が英語に入った。
もとは祝いの席で撒く砂糖菓子そのものだったが、謝肉祭で菓子の代わりに色紙の小片を撒くようになり、紙片のほうが confetti と呼ばれるようになった。
英語では不可算名詞で、throw confetti のように使い a confetti とは言わない。イタリア語では今も confetto は砂糖菓子である。
