dip（さっと浸す・くぼみ）+ -er（〜するもの） で「浸すもの」。芯の *dʰewbʰ-（沈み込む・深い） は deep（深い）・dive（潜る）と同じで、下へ沈める動きが元にある。

液体にひたして汲み上げる道具、つまり柄の長い「ひしゃく」がその代表である。北斗七星を the Big Dipper と呼ぶのも、あの並びがひしゃくの形に見えるから。

補足: 鳥のカワガラスも dipper と言う。水に潜って川底の虫を採る習性と、体を上下に沈めるしぐさから、同じ「浸す」の語で呼ばれている。
