中英語 erthe-worm がそのまま earth（土）+ worm（細長い虫） になった語。土の中にいる虫、つまりミミズ。
earth は *h₁er-（大地）にさかのぼる。worm はもともと蛇のような細長い生き物も広く指し、古い物語では竜を worm と呼ぶことがある。
土を耕して肥やすので庭仕事では歓迎される。似た作りの虫の名に silkworm（蚕）・glowworm（ツチボタル）がある。worm は動詞にもなり、worm one's way は体をくねらせて進むこと。
