ecumenicalの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ecumene（人の住む世界）+ -ical（〜に関する） で、原義は「人の住む世界全体にかかわる」。特定の地域や教派に閉じず、世界中を一つと見る視点が語の芯にある。
そこからキリスト教の文脈に定着し、「全教会に共通の」「教派の垣根を越えた」という意味になった。ecumenical council（公会議）は全教会規模の会議、the ecumenical movement は諸教派の一致を目指す運動を指す。宗教以外でも「幅広い立場を包み込む」意で使われることがある。
派生の ecumenism（教会一致運動）・ecumenically と合わせ、「世界大の・分け隔てのない」という一語で押さえておくとよい。
