覚え方
ラテン語 grātīs（無料で・ただで）をそのまま借りた語。代金と引き換えではなく厚意によって与えられる、という発想が出発点。
「称える・喜んで迎える」の *gʷerH- が背後にあり、grateful（ありがたく思う）・gratitude（感謝）・gratuity（心づけ）・gratification（満足）と同族。grat- は「ありがたい・好意」。
意味は free とほぼ同じだが、gratis は「料金を取らずに」を強調する堅い語で、副詞（work gratis）にも形容詞（gratis copies）にも使える。
