ラテン語 habitus（外見・状態）は、habeō（持つ・所有する）＋ -tus（動作名詞を作る語尾）からできた語で、「（体や心に）持っている状態・身にまとっている様子」が原義。
この「身に持っている状態」というイメージが、繰り返し身についた振る舞いを指す「習慣」や、体つき・性質を指す「体質」という英語 habit の意味につながった。
habeō の仲間には exhibit（外に持ち出す→展示する）・inhibit（中に留めて持つ→抑制する）・prohibit（前もって持たせない→禁止する）がある。hib/hab を見たら「持つ」と読むのがコツ。
