idiot（愚か者）+ -ic（〜に関する） で「愚か者のような＝馬鹿げた」。人にも行為にも使え、an idiotic mistake（馬鹿げた間違い）のように「考えれば避けられたはずの愚かさ」を指す。
idiot は idiom（固有の言い回し）・idiosyncrasy（その人特有の癖）と同じ系統の語で、芯にあるのは「自分だけの・他と切れている」という感覚。周りと噛み合わないという見方が、のちに強い侮蔑語へ傾いた。
現在の idiot は差別的に響くため、名詞で人を呼ぶより idiotic（馬鹿げた）で行為を評するほうが無難である。
