ラテン語 absurdus（論理的矛盾がある・全く無意味な）は、材料の absonus（不協和な）と surdus（聞こえない・無反応の）に結びつく語。音が合わず、耳にも届かず、反応を引き起こさないものというイメージから、「筋が通らない・不条理な」へ発展した。
surdus の背景には、痛む・化膿するという意味をもつ *swer- がある。音の調和を欠き、まともに受け止められないものを absurd と考えると、absurd idea（ばかげた考え）や absurd situation（不条理な状況）の意味をつかみやすい。surd を見たら「聞こえない」、absonus を見たら「音が合わない」と覚える。
