ラテン語 īnflō（吹き込む・膨らませる）= in-（中へ）+ flō（吹く）。その過去分詞 īnflātus が英語の inflate・inflated になった。
flō の先には「吹く」を意味する *bʰleh₁- があり、blow（吹く）・blast（突風）も同じ系統。
空気を入れて膨らませるのが元の意味で、そこから値段や数字を「水増しした」、自尊心を「膨れ上がった」へ広がった。物価の膨張を指す inflation も同じ語。
