ラテン語 inhaerēns(付着している・密着している)は、「中へ付いている」というイメージを持つ。*en-(中へ)から、何かの内部にしっかり付着して離れない状態を表し、英語 inherent は「本質の中に付いている」→「本質的な一部として存在する」という意味になった。
inherent quality(内在する性質)や inherent risk(内在するリスク)のように、外から加わったものではなく、対象そのものに備わっている性質を指す。in-/en- を見たら「中へ入り込んでいる」と考えると、意味をつかみやすい。
