inter-（間で・互いに）+ active（働いている）。act の芯は *h₂eǵ-（駆り立てる） で、何かを動かす力を指す。片方だけが動くのではなく、互いに駆り立て合って反応するのが interactive である。
コンピュータの文脈では「双方向の・対話式の」。an interactive website（利用者の操作に応答するサイト）、an interactive whiteboard（電子黒板）、an interactive lesson（参加型の授業）。受け手が黙って受け取るだけではない場面で使う。
interact（相互に作用する）・interaction（相互作用）・activity（活動）・activate（作動させる）が同じ family。inter- で「互いに」、act で「動かす」と読めば、意味はその場で組み立てられる。
