古英語 līnsǣd（亜麻の種子）がそのまま現代語になった複合語。līn（亜麻・亜麻布）+ sǣd（種）で、前半が今の lin-、後半が seed に当たる。
sǣd の背後には *seh₁-（種をまく）があり、seed・sow（まく）・season（もとは種まきの時期）が同じ系統。まくもの＝種という素直な命名である。
この種から搾るのが linseed oil（亜麻仁油）で、油絵具や木工の仕上げ、そして linoleum（リノリウム）の原料になる。食用にする場合は flaxseed と呼ばれることが多い。
