英語 otherwise は、other（別の・同じでない）+ -wise（方向・様態を表す副詞を作る語尾）からなる語で、古英語の on ōþre wīsan（別のやり方で）にそのまま対応する。

「別のやり方で」という原義から、「その他の点では」「別の方法で」という意味とともに、「そうでなければ・さもないと」という条件を表す接続副詞の用法にも広がった。

-wise が付く仲間には likewise（同様に）・clockwise（時計回りに）がある。-wise を見たら「〜のやり方で」と考えると、otherwise も「他のやり方で」からの意味の広がりを追いやすい。
