古フランス語 portal（門扉・外構入口）は、ラテン語 porta（城門・主要な入り口）に、関係を表す形容詞語尾 -ālis を組み合わせた語に由来する。もともとは人や物が通り抜ける大きな門を指し、そこから建物の入口、さらに情報へ入るためのデジタルな「入口」へ意味が広がった。
portal は、複数の情報やサービスへアクセスする一か所の入口を指す。portable と同じく port の仲間だが、こちらは「運ぶ」よりも、porta の門をくぐって中へ入るイメージで覚えると、ポータルサイトの意味につながりやすい。
