覚え方
vein はラテン語 vēna(血管)につながり、体では「静脈」を表す。さらに、葉を走る葉脈や岩の中に細長く続く鉱脈にも使われる。表面や内部を筋のように通るもの、という共通した見方を持つと、対象が変わっても意味を追いやすい。
葉の細い筋は leaf veins、金を含む鉱脈は a gold vein。文章や話し方では in a humorous vein が「ユーモラスな調子で」を表し、in the same vein は「同じような調子で・趣旨で」となる。覚えるときは、物の中を通る筋と、話全体を通して続く調子を重ねると、「特徴的な様式」という意味も取り出しやすい。
