吹くものそのものが wind で、windmill（風車）・windshield・windpipe（気管）・windbreak・windstorm のほか、風向きを言う headwind・upwind・downwind・crosswind が並ぶ。windfall は「風で落ちた実」から「棚ぼた」へ転じた語。window は「風の目」＝壁に開けた穴からとされ、windowpane・windowsill に残る。羽ばたいて風を起こす wing も同じ根とされ、wingspan・winged・wingless・batwing・lacewing のように使われる。空模様を言う weather、風でもみ殻を飛ばす winnow も同じ枝。
ラテン語 ventus（風）からは vent（通気口）・ventilate（風を通す→換気する）・ventilator・hyperventilate（過呼吸になる）が入った。速さを表す語も「吹くように速い」からとされ、velocity・velodrome・velocipede・velociraptor に残っている。ギリシャ語の「蒸気」からは atmosphere（大気）が作られた。w で始まる身近な語（wind・wing・weather・window）と、v で始まる硬い語（vent・velocity）が同じ根だと知っておくと、意味の見当がつけやすい。
