weather は古英語 weder（天気・風）に由来し、さらに「息を吹きかける・風を起こす」を表す印欧祖語 *h₂weh₁- と結びつく。空気が吹き動かされて生じる状態から、雨・風・晴れなどの「天候」を表すようになった。
