ラテン語 priōritās（優先権・先行性）は、prior（以前の・前の）に -tās（状態） が付いた語。prior の「前に・先に」という感覚は、*per-（前に・通り抜ける）につながっている。

「先にあるもの」から「先に扱うべきもの」へ意味が発展し、priority は「優先順位・最重要事項」になった。prior は先行、priority は先行させるべき重要性と整理し、prioritize（優先する）も一緒に覚えるとよい。
