覚え方
ラテン語 sector（切る者）につながり、もとになる動詞は secō（切る）。現在の sector は「区域・部門・分野」を表す。覚える手掛かりには、全体をいくつかに区切り、そのうちの一つを取り上げる図が使える。数学の a sector of a circle は円の扇形の部分で、二本の半径と弧に囲まれた区画を指す。
the manufacturing sector は製造業の分野、the private sector は民間部門。社会や経済の全体を、活動内容や運営の主体で区分している。ある会社の小さな部署だけでなく、複数の会社や組織を含む分野にも使えるのがポイント。section（区分・部分）も「切る」系統の仲間なので、全体のどの部分を区切って見ているかを考えると意味がまとまる。
