aspect はラテン語 aspectus（外観・様子）に由来し、aspiciō（眺める・詳しく調べる）+ -tus（動作名詞を作る語尾）からできている。つまり「目を向けて見ること」から、その結果として見える「外観・様子」へ、さらに物事の一つの「側面・視点」へ意味が広がった。
aspiciō の背景にある *speḱ-（視線を向ける・観察する）を、目を向けて見える一面として覚えよう。inspect（中を詳しく見る）、spectator（見る人）、perspective（見通し・視点）も、見ることに関係する仲間。aspect は、同じ対象をどの面から見るかを表す語である。
