覚え方
substantially は substantial（実質の・かなりの）+ -ly（副詞を作る）。substantial には *steh₂-（立つ） のイメージがあり、しっかり立っているもの、確かな実体を指すところから「本質的な・実質的な」、さらに程度が大きい「かなりの」へ発展した。そこに -ly が付いて、「実質的に・大いに」という副詞になる。
「見かけだけでなく、しっかり立っている実体に関わる」ものが substantial で、substantially はその性質や程度を述べる語。語源ツリーでは副詞化する -ly に *leyg-（跳ぶ・走る・活発に動く） の枝も結び付くので、substantial は「実体・大きさ」、-ly は「そのように」と押さえるとよい。
